You can now build your own stories and characters in Myrlo

Myrlo 2.0.3 lets you create your own Stories, Characters, and Lore inside shared Worlds, and helps players find what you make.

Say your shoes go missing in the middle of a story. Somewhere in Myrlo there might be a story about a goblin who steals shoes, written by someone you've never met, and now it can show up because it fits.

That's what Myrlo 2.0.3 makes possible. You can now create your own Stories, Characters, and Lore inside shared Worlds, and the people playing never have to go hunting for what you made.

This is a big change from how Myrlo started, and it took real work on our Story Graph and creation systems to get here. The Story Graph is how Myrlo connects published Stories, Characters, and places so the world can remember them and bring them back when they fit. Stories and Characters are complicated in Myrlo. They're mostly structured data, with only about 50% written prose, so letting people build them without breaking something was always a little scary. We also wanted to keep the ability to change a Character's gender and role on the fly.

What you can create

Stories, Characters, and Lore. Every Story and Character lives in a World, but you don't have to own that World. You can lean on the Lore that's already there, and add Story-specific Lore of your own to expand it.

Creator tools

The idea behind the tools is simple: you write, we build.

You author a Story or Character in a pretty standard way. You fill out each field and set up relationships, life circumstances, backstories, and beats. When you're finished, we compile it into the format Myrlo actually runs on.

For Characters, that means building out graph connections for relationships, locations, factions, and memories. We also break down their personality into reactions. How do they act around friends? Family? Someone they love? What do they do when they're nervous, scared, or angry? That's what keeps a Character in character while the story plays out.

Stories get a similar pass, plus one more. We set up the rules for the different ways a Story can begin. Some have to start at the beginning. Others can be stumbled on halfway through, or even played in reverse. The AI sets up those paths ahead of time, so during play it can find a Story that fits the moment.

The Coach

The tools are still sparse on documentation, and things are changing quickly. They'll keep changing with your feedback. To help in the meantime, the app now has the Coach, an AI helper built in.

Describe your Character or Story in plain language and go back and forth. The Coach can write, update, or remove things for you, with your approval.

When you publish, the Coach also does a quality check. It makes sure things make sense, flags anything that breaks the rules, and helps you set things up properly. You can always play your private creations without publishing them. Only published creations become part of the shared World.

How people find what you make

A common problem with user-generated content is discovery. People don't know what they don't know exists. Big creators end up taking the popular spot around the clock, and new work falls off the map if it doesn't get traction right away.

Myrlo works differently. The Story Graph connects your creation to others in a giant web. You aren't writing a one-off story. You're writing a Story set in a World that other Stories share. Everything you create builds on what's already there, and the AI can draw on it at any time.

That's why a player never has to find your goblin story. If their shoes go missing, the AI may pull it up and use it because it's relevant. The Graph pulls in what fits, not just what's popular. That gives newer creators a real way in, and older stories a way to come back.

Remixable Characters

You can mark a Character as Remixable. Other creators can then link their own Characters to yours through relationships, like adding a sibling or a coworker. They can also cast your Character directly in their own Story. That way players can meet one creator's work through another's.

Creators of any size can add to the richness of a World, fill gaps in its stories, and bring older content back into view.

Inclusivity

Inclusivity is a core pillar of Myrlo, and losing that was a real concern when we thought about opening up creation.

You're welcome to write a Character with a specific gender. Sometimes that makes for a stronger story. By default, every Character can still be cast as any gender, and the Coach will encourage you to keep it that way. Relationship types stay genderless too. There's no "sister" or "brother," only "sibling," and everything else is contextual. We never want a player unable to tell a story because the system forces a particular combination of traits.

Can other people build on my Characters?

Only if you mark them Remixable.

Closing

This is a big shift, and a big expansion. It opens the door to much larger, richer Worlds and Stories, and we can't wait to see what you come up with. Come by the Discord to ask questions, throw out ideas, or share what you've made.
